DNA extraction methodology for genetic analysis of peach palm (Bactris gasipaes Kunth.) populations PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira

DNA extraction is a very important step for DNA genetic analysis in peach palm (Bactris gasipaes Kunth.). The aim of this work was to develop a methodology of DNA extraction. Fresh, frozen and dried leaves were utilized. DNA from fresh leaves were purified one time while frozen and dried leaves was purified two times. DNA bands were coloured intensively showing a high amount of purified DNA and with an excellent resolution in agarosis gel 2%, such for fresh leaves as much as for frozen and dried leaves.

Effects of different spacings on heartof- palm production from peach-palm planted in the coastal region of the state Paraná – Brazil – 1ST Harvest PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira

An experiment was established in Paranaguá, located in the costal region of the State of Paraná, in southern Brasil, in order to evaluate commercial yield of hearth-of-palm produced by Peach-Palm (Bactris gasipaes) established under the following four different initial spacings: T1 2x1m (5000 seedlings/ha); T2 3x1m (3333 seedlings/ha); T3 1,5x1x1m (8000 seedlings/ha); and T4 2x1x1m (6666 seedlings/ha). Mineral fertilizers (NPK) were applied at planting as well as subsequently. Escolitídeos como bioindicadores do “declínio do nim” no Brasil PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira

Este é o primeiro registro do ataque de besouros (Curculionidae, Scolitinae), no Brasil, causando danos em plantios de nim, entre 7 e 10 anos, em Brejinho de Nazaré, Tocantins, constado em junho de 2009. Os insetos foram identificados como, Xylosandrus compactus (Eichhoff), Cryptocarenus diadematus Eggers, 1937 e Hypothenemus sp. Westwood, 1836. Os plantios atacados apresentavam crescimento abaixo do esperado para a região, baixa produção de sementes, desfolhamento acentuado e rebrota intensa nos ramos, seguida por morte de brotos jovens e/ou do ápice do ramo. Evaluation and genetic progress in volume of grevilea provenances at three different environment PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira

Twenty one provenances of Grevillea robusta Cunn were tested at Nova Esperança and Quedas do Iguaçu, Paraná state and Anhembi, São Paulo state, Brazil. With the aim of comparing the performance of the original provenances with the comercial provenance collected in Maringa, Paraná state included as a control. Provenance trials were installed in a randomized block design with rectangular plots, each one with six plants spaced 3 m x 3 m, with 15 replications. Five among the ten best provenances at Anhembi presented better growth at Quedas do Iguaçu and Nova Esperança (Duck Creek, Fine Flower, Rappville, Bottle Creek and Mc Pherson’s Creek). Genetic Gain for Wood Volume in Progeny Trial of Grevílea (Breeding Cycle 2) in Avaré, State of São Paulo PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira

Twenty and twenty three seed provenances of Grevillea robusta A. Cunn. were imported from Australia, in 1993 and 1994, respectively, by Embrapa Florestas. This genetic germoplasm was utilized for starting a breeding program in the states of Paraná, São Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul. In 2002, twenty eight genotypes were selected in the Presidente Castelo Branco-PR district whose seeds were utilized for the installing second generation progenies test in Avaré-SP. Randomized blocks was the statistical design utilized, with linear plots of five plants, adjusted in a compass 3m x 3m, with 8 replications. Twenty and twenty three seed provenances of Grevillea robusta Cunn were imported from Australia, in 1993 and 1994 respectively, by Embrapa Florestas. This genetic germoplasm was utilized for starting a breeding program in the State of Paraná, São Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul. Total surface occupied by Grevillea experiments managed by Embrapa Florestas reachs 27,13 ha, being provenance tests, embracing 11,22 ha, installed in 1994, and progenies tests, comprising 15,91 ha, planted in 1994. Produção de pupunheira (Bactris gasipaes) para palmito sob diferentes espaçamentos, no Litoral do Estado do Paraná PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira

Este trabalho teve por objetivos caracterizar as propriedades químicas do solo sob plantio de pupunheira(Bactris gasipaes) aos 24, 39 e 48 meses de idade e, quantificar na agroindústria, nessas idades, a produção depalmito em toletes, em rodelas e picado, em função de diferentes espaçamentos. Para tanto, em março de 2001,foram instaladas duas áreas experimentais localizadas nos Km 7 e Km 10 da Estrada Alexandra-Matinhos, Municípiode Paranaguá, PR. Second Generation Half-sib Progenies Wood Production of Grevillea in the Region of Avaré - SP PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira

The Grevillea robusta A. Cunn is utilized for coffee plantation shading, crops growing and pasture shading, apiculture, ornamentation and wind breaks. It is also used to produce sawn wood. One test of 28 second generation half-sib progenies was planted in Forestry Institute of São Paulo, with 20°03’S latitude and 48°54’W logitude geographic coordenates and 630m of altitude. Silvicultural evaluation of Rapanea ferruginea and Citharexylum myrianthum established in abandoned pastures PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira

Planting woodlots for ecosystem restoration must be based on silvics and ecological features of the species. This paper deals with silvicultural performance of native Brazilian species Rapanea ferruginea (Ruiz & Pav.) Mez and Citharexylum myrianthum Cham. planted in abandoned pastures in Antonina, coast of Paraná state. Monospecific plots were 69 months old and situated on hill slope and alluvial plain, sharply contrasting on water availability. Rapanea ferruginea showed higher survival and growth in the slope. Concerning to Citharexylum myrianthum, survival values were high and similar in both reliefs, although growth was higher in the plain.

Soil and climate on the establishment of neem (Azadirachta indica A. Juss) cultivation in forestry and agroforestry systems on different Brazilian regions PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira

Azadirachta indica is a species of multiple uses originated from India. It belongs to Meliaceae family. This species was introduced in Brazil in 1993. The first experimental trials were established in the State of Goiás, specifically in “Cerrado” (Brazilian savanna) ecosystem. In Northern and Northwestern Brazil neem has been planted in small plots in precipitation conditions ranging from 600 mm (Petrolina, PE) to 2200 mm (Castanhal, PA). There are more cultivation in the States of São Paulo and Bahia and in Central Brazil, where precipitation ranges from 1000 to 2000 mm, especially concentrated in the summer.
